Athearn Model Trains
Athearn Model Trains offer quality, dependability and attention to detail
For more than 60 years Athearn trains and accessories
have attracted a wide range of model train fans. Athearn has a product line
of some 2,000 items, and items are offered in HO, N and 1:50 scales. Quality,
dependability and delightful attention to detail are hallmarks of the Athearn
Model Trains and accessories available from Milepost
38 Model Trains.
For the HO fan, Athearn’s passenger and
freight engines and rolling stock includes everything from gondolas and
flat cars to reefers and boxcars in various lengths. HO vehicles include Kenworth
and Mack trucks, John Deere tractors, and even Ford Model A cars and trucks.
Area rail commuters will recognize Athearn’s HO-scale Metrolink coach
and cab cars.
Athearn’s HO line includes the popular
FP45 series of Santa Fe diesel locomotives, modeled after the FP45s Santa
Fe ordered from General Motors’ Electro-Motive
Division in the late 1960s to pull the Super Chief and other passenger
trains. The FP45s from Athearn include models equipped with digital sound
and DCC (digital command control.)
Athearn’s N-gauge products include SD70 Series diesel-electric locomotives,
modeled after another engine produced by GM’s Electro-Motive Division.
GM has built more than 4,000 of SD70s since 1992. The Athearn SD70 series
includes engines from the Union Pacific, Southern Pacific, Norfolk Southern,
and Santa Fe railroads, to name a few.
The 1:50 scale line features precision die-cast products, such as a 1931
Ford Model A Sedan and a 1931 Ford Model A pickup truck.
Athearn is the legacy of Irv Athearn’s life-long
love affair with model railroading, which had its beginnings in 1938 when
he built an elaborate O-gauge layout that filled his mother’s house.
When he advertised to sell the layout a few years later, the response was
so great, it gave him the idea to sell model railroads for a living. He
eventually moved the operation into a separate facility in Hawthorne, CA.,
in 1948 and branched out into HO kits. Athearn died in 1991, but the company
he founded continues Irv Athearn’s
commitment to offer quality products at reasonable prices.
A large selection of Athearn Model Trains can
